Graphite
In 1795, Nicolas Jacques Conté invented the pencil as we know it today, consisting of a graphite and clay core encased in wood. It was immediately adopted by the greatest artists, such as Delacroix, Degas, and Picasso. Today, it is still manufactured in France and recommended by all artists. The Graphite Pencil has a particularly smooth lead that does not scratch the paper and glides smoothly over the surface. The modern graphite lead, composed of a mixture of clay and graphite, finally makes it possible to grade the hardness of the lead, i.e., H for a hard lead and B for a soft lead, thus allowing artists, whether novice or experienced, to create their drawings with precision and contrast.
