pencil lead
Each mine has its own recipe, which is closely guarded. A mine is generally composed of a mineral charge, pigments, and an additive. The Pierre Noire pencil, for example, is made from carbon black pigment without any added oils, giving it a dense, deep appearance and a unique velvety finish. The paste is mixed, passed through a cartridge machine, then dried to obtain its cylindrical shape. This is known as extrusion. The degree of hardness of the lead is determined by the drying time and the proportions of the recipe.

WOOD STORAGE AND PLANING
The lead is encased in two grooved plates made from California red cedar, a wood renowned worldwide and recognized for its use in art pencils. The leads are placed in each groove of the plate, glued and pressed. The plates are then planed to produce individual round pencils, carved from the wood.

THE VARNISH
Once the individual wooden pencil has been produced, it is then dyed. For Conté à Paris, a varnish in the same color as the lead is used. Up to 12 coats are required to achieve the desired finish for Conté à Paris pencils. This varnish makes the pencil comfortable to hold and allows the color to be quickly identified in your pencil case.

MARKING
Each pencil reference has its own marking. A bronze mold is made with the final information visible on the pencil, i.e., the brand, the name of the technique and the color code, the range reference, the origin (France), and finally the barcode. The Conté à Paris marking is either silver or gold, depending on the base color of the varnish.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Finally, it's time for the cap. Each pencil is expertly capped with a drop of varnish at its tip, meticulously and gracefully completing the pencil's look. For example, the cap is gold for all our Pastel Pencils. After drying overnight, the pencil is sharpened and ready to be picked up by artists eager to create.
