Graphite lead is particularly silky, so it doesn't scratch the paper and glides smoothly over the surface.

In 1794, Nicolas Jacques Conté perfected the modern graphite lead, made from a mixture of clay and graphite, which finally made it possible to graduate the lead's hardness. The pencils he created in 1795 enabled France to produce its own writing and drawing products.

Charcoal pencils are recommended for meticulous, precise work, whether it's creating a sophisticated perspective, a cartoon character or a flawlessly constructed nude.

Charcoal pencil produces a dry, dense, intense black. Its special feature is that it doesn't break, making it easy to carry.

As for the eraser and tortillon, they can be used to soften pastel or pencil lines in a very localised way, as if using your fingers.

Modern graphite pencils, made from a mixture of clay and graphite, finally offer the option of graduating the hardness of the pencil, i.e. H for hard and B for soft, enabling both novice and experienced artists to draw with precision and contrast.

The advantage of charcoal is that it is perfectly miscible with graphite pencils, and is recommended for long or quick sketches.
Compressed charcoal comes from a chemical formulation based on pigments and binders. This process gives the charcoal a regular shape that holds better in the hand. These charcoals are less volatile and last longer than natural charcoals. They are oilier and leave more marks on the paper.
